Terrific resource. Sadly Zondervan has changed the publishing quality of both this and Hunt's other book, Honey for a Womans Heart. I like to give this book as a baby shower gift and in the future I will be seeking used copies. The edition I received recently to give as a gift is very different from my older copy. The new editions are printed on paper that is so thin the type from the other side shows through and makes it difficult to read. Very poorly done. I hope they will return to a better print quality in the future.
I just received this book today, ordered at the recommendation of a friend. I had asked for advice on learning to navigate the children's section of the library. How do I know which books to get for my children? I read the first chapter today, and I had goosebumps the whole time. Gladys Hunt's first chapter on the importance of words well spoken, and the potential they can unlock within our children, the holistic effect of well chosen literature, was exciting and inspiring. Excited about finishing this book, and about using the EXTENSIVE recommendations by age and stage for introducing great books to my kids.
This book is now a second-generation purchase for me. The well-loved copy which I bought when my now-31-year-old daughter was a newborn is still on my shelf, bearing many notes in its margins. Now I have purchased this edition for my daughter's to use with her soon-to-be-born son; she is overjoyed to get her own copy, having heard me talk about this book for so long. What a beautiful reference for those who want to provide the children in their lives with great literature with real substance--all reviewed with a Christian viewpoint in mind. I highly recommend!
Excellent resource filled with great reading lists as well as some chapters with guidance on how to use the lists (and to help your children get the most out of reading) effectively. Some of the recommendations didn't impress me that much when I looked them up, but overall there is plenty here that is well worth the time to hunt down. It's been a rewarding adventure introducing the family to many new books I never would have known about without this book.
I can't say enough good things about this book. It's a great resource for finding books for your children that influence and encourage imagination and good language usage. The book lists are separated by suggested age levels and include great classic and timeless books that are full of adventure and life lessons and are beautifully written. I often times reference it before trips to the library to make sure some of the books listed are included in our family library book choices.It's a great baby shower gift and a wonderful guide for building your home library.
This is a thought-provoking and inspirational book about the value of reading quality literature to children. I thought it was mostly going to be a booklist, but it is so much more and I thoroughly enjoyed the chapters on reading and enjoying literature with our children more than I ever would have imagined. I already do value and enjoy reading with my kids, so I just didn't think there would be much more to say about it. But I was wrong! Gladys Hunt outlines so many amazing values and ideas for reading with our kids - I was inspired! And, there is quite an extensive booklist, well organized by age and reading level, that has been a blessing to our family. Love it!
Love the book lists was in a rut every time we went to the library and this has been a life saver!! have been using it for a couple months and haven't gotten a book yet my kids didn't like!!
This is a wonderful resource for any parent who wants to build strong family bonds, improve their child's mind and vocabulary, and help them grow in character. I blindly did many of the things in this book with my children, but I wish I'd had this book years ago.
