Well written informative law textbook suitable for all interested in the criminal justice system.
easy to read, good questions prior to cases that are posed.
This was the casebook assigned in my 1L criminal law course. The cases are well-edited to direct the reader to the holding, and the book does a nice job of demonstrating how a given doctrine will vary across jurisdictions. For those who like helpful "guiding" questions, this is not a great book-- there are not many study guide-type questions to help the reader identify the main points. However, I did not have a problem because the book breaks down the black letter law simply and directly in introductory sections and then poses well edited cases that make the law digestible. Because it's criminal law, the cases are almost universally interesting and dramatic in subject matter.Initially, I felt the book had too strong a focus on social issues, as it has a number of articles and questions regarding the social/cultural dimensions of cases and the U.S. legal system. However, as the course progressed, I came to see questions of race and gender as inextricable from the legal system.The reason I have taken off one star is because the book often omits citations, including in academic articles that are heavy on opinion/non-objective analysis. In some cases, I wanted to check sources to evaluate the strength of an argument. Other than that, this book was the easiest casebook to read in my 1L year, and did a great job communicating sometimes convoluted subject matter.
