Review

“Here is wisdom that is beauty and beauty that is wisdom. William Martin's final book of his Tao Te Ching trilogy is a masterpiece. It illuminates all the unexplored potentials inherent in the second half of life and eases the mind into each one. Powerful, lyrical, insightful, The Sage’s Tao Te Ching is a guide that will lead your heart gently and surely to ‘life itself.’”—Hugh and Gayle Prather, authors of The Little Book of Letting Go“Let this gem of a book and the wisdom it imparts enfold every aspect of your being. Whatever time you have remaining on this planet will be immensely enriched.”—David McNally, author of Even Eagles Need a Push“Like its predecessors, The Sage’s Tao Te Ching opens our minds to the wisdom of our natural state and encourages us to accept and honor the inevitability of the wonder-filled grace of aging. Bill Martin deserves our humble gratitude for reacquainting us with our true selves.”—from the foreword by Chungliang Al Huang

No one ever knows it all but the Sage is more comfortable with what they know, and life seems to be a bit clearer. Their shoes fit, and they dance, while the rest of us, trudge. Our shoes pinch every step of the way. New shoes just might be the answer. Can we find shoes that fit our feet? Few translators follow through with commentaries that really point to the underling and pertinent meaning of a passage. Not so here. Bill Martin's Taoist books thoughtfully and thoroughly focus on allowing the western reader to grasp the theme flowing through each passage, guiding readers to see how it might apply to their life............Not his life, or anyone's life,.......just theirs. He does not dictate an ultimate answer. A Sage is a wisdom seeking person who has gained some insight and is able to follow his own counsel in a world where many of us are lost. That's why the Sage can dance with the stars......Give this a shot. It's a good one.

A reinterpretation of Chinese philosophy from the perspective of age seventy. If only I had photographic memory,as well as, discipline, I, too, could be a sage. Truth is spoken here, but can you accept it. Are you able to let go of those ideals that hindered our ability to let go? To be contented with fewer things, less power. Can you not be so quick to offer up controversy, to speak less often? Would our wisdom be invited if we embraced pause? I fall short, but it is good food for thought.

Got this for my mom for her 70th birthday and she loves it! I got it for her because I had already enjoyed the parenting version and couples version myself. Now I want to get the activist version. Maybe I'm a little overzealous.... but these are nice little moments or meditations, all good thematic interpretations of the Tao Te Ching, easy to pick up whenever you like for a little food for thought.

Martin's The Sage's Tao Te Ching: Ancient Advice for the Second Half of Life is a series of 81 short meditations inspired by a classical Chinese wisdom text. Do not expect a translation of the original text of the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu! Rather this graceful book is a series of short meditations on age-ing and sage-ing.The meditations are short but should not be read in a hurry. Take your time with each one and savor it. I found that reading just one or two (or occasionally three) of these at a time was enough to stimulate my own thinking and feeling about growing older. The author's wisdom joined with Lao Tzu's wisdom is a potent combination. Each meditation has an illustration by Hank Tusinski. Most of these are excellent and go well with the text.

I love this book. I am a yoga teacher who has been studying Taoism on my own for about 20 years. Most of my students are enjoying the second half of their lives. I read verses to start meditation and relaxation at the end of classes. Some of my students bought this book for gifts this past year. I just bought two more copies for friends who are yoga teachers. Sometimes I hesitate to read a verse but usually, someone comes up to me after class to comment on the reading. Thank you for this book.

In our society we celebrate our youth and young adult lives, but resist recognition of aging as if it is a failure. We're fairly unimaginative. (The option of not experiencing old age is supremely limiting.) It's as if the fading of youthful skin is a signal to get out of the way and hide the hard won lines and wrinkles so as not to remind the youngers ones of their futures. We don't yet fully value the riches that are within the minds and hearts living in the aged. The Sages Tao Te Ching gently reveals how to look forward to and cherish age as much as we cherish childhood, youth and working adulthood. In fact, one can come away with the idea that the point of our whole life's journey is to have the luxury of becoming old.Imortant: while it helps to have a comfortable bed, possessions in old age become irrelevant to what really matters. What used to occupy us tends to fade away. The long view provides great joy.

If this is your kind of thing - philosophical and meditative - this book is really terrific. In fact, I love this series of books by William Martin - THE PARENT'S TAO TE CHING, and THE COUPLES TAO TE CHING - and I often give them as small, meaningful gifts. They each provide small nuggets of wisdom that make one ponder and think...

William Martin is a masterful helper. I found this book a blessing. He also wrote a most helpful book called, "The Art of Pastoring", which I have re-read at least 6 times; incredibly helpful for my work as a United Methodist minister, especially when I went through some difficult times. As far as the "zen" comments, I, for one make a slight personal adjustment as I read this book. Whenever I come to the phrase, "the Tao", I simply make the mental translation, "the Lord." Then everything seems to fall into place gracefully for me.I'm preparing to send a copy to a dear friend right now. This book is a great blessing.
