It's probably harder to write a short scary story than another kind because once the arc is set, how do you deliver a surprise? A swimmer determined to take a dip in a place she shouldn't, a bedroom full of nasty toys that unstitch each other, yet another stuffed toy that smells so much like a deceased, hated husband . . . there isn't much room once such premises have been laid down to do anything but unfurl details that can't stray far from the starting points. Of the stories in this collection, none is particularly scary, none is distinguished enough to merit hardcover publication (with or without Stephen King's name as editor). The first is a little creepy in a way that Robert Aickman's work was creepy, but lacking Aickman's depth of characterization and cleverness. One is passingly amusing as a satire. Several are well written. But this is a very thin collection that could have fit comfortably into half its space. Finally, did each of the six contributors have to write a preface declaring their admiration for Stephen King? Isn't anyone embarrassed by this kind of thing?
When any author attaches their name to anything, their fans take notice. When Stephen King attached his name to Six Scary Stories, he was making a statement to potential buyers: these stories are scary. They aren't. There may be elements that are disturbing, thrilling, or bizarre, but with the exception of the first tale (which wasn't all that scary either), I would say these are just six stories masquerading as scary.I'll agree with Stephen King on one thing: of these six stories, the winner was the most entertaining of the bunch. The other five, whittled down from a contest pool of eight hundred, are all over the place. Most are forgettable, the lone exception being La Morte De L’Amant, a tale I found exciting, but never horrifying.
I was very excited to read stories that Stephen King deemed good enough to be in this book. Wild Swimming, Eau-De-Eric and The Bear Trap were my favorites. There are no jump out at you scary stories but they are all creepy in their own way. This is definitely worth reading but it is pretty short. I read the book in around 45 minutes.
Stephen King should leave reviewing other authors stories to someone else. I read this book from cover to cover in an hour. It's called Six Scary Stories. It should have been called Six Stupid Stories. They were all boring and predictable. I won't be passing the book along to friends who like Stephen King, because, well, for one thing it's not written by Stephen King, and two, I wouldn't do that to my friends. This is nowhere near Stephen King caliber. I will give it to the thrift store, but I feel sorry for whoever waste's their money on it. I've never been so disappointed in a book in my life.
Elodie Harper’s “Wild Swimming†takes place in Lithuania, where a swimmer wants to explore a local lake. There’s an old village buried underneath it, and her hostess insists swimming there would show disrespect–but of course the woman doesn’t listen.Manuela Saragosa’s “Eau-de-Eric†is one of my favorites in this volume. Kathy’s husband Eric is dead, but her little girl Ellie just found a teddy bear that smells of his aftershave. Kathy doesn’t want the reminder of her dead husband, but Ellie’s determined to keep hold of the bear. There’s a fantastic sense of inevitability to this one, and Kathy has a surprising amount of depth to her given the short length of the story.In “The Spots,†by Paul Bassett Davies, a man is set to the task of counting a leopard’s spots by his country’s great Leader. The depiction of this Leader in the little details that emerge is both whimsical and dark.Michael Button’s “The Unpicking†sees a bunch of kids’ toys trying to figure out what game to play while their child sleeps. This is another favorite, as it has whispers of Ligotti’s fascination with puppets and marionettes in it.Stuart Johnstone’s “La Mort de L’Amant†shows us a man looking out off of a bridge, and a police officer who comes to make sure he’s okay. I found the ending of this one a bit too abrupt, but it was otherwise quite good.Finally, Neil Hudson’s “The Bear Trap†presents Calvin, a boy who’s weathering the end of the world at his prepper father’s house. He and his teddy bears are none too happy when a stranger comes looking to take whatever he can get.I’m not including much detail, as it’s easy to ruin the fun in short horror stories. I’ll just say that these are delightful little nuggets, and for the most part I found them all quite satisfying.
Some people feel overwhelmed when seeing books with more than 300 pages. For those readers who like horror, this book is for you. It is a collection of six different authors that were selected via a contest. Stephen King will tell you about it in the forward. I am reluctant to buy this type of book, but am glad I did. The reads were quick and well written. Before each story, there is information about the author, as well as comments by author regarding Stephen King. Enjoy!
