For those reading. I am just a critic, the easiest job is to criticize others on their work., while truly creating nothing. I understand this and want to only present my opinion on a fantastic author. First and foremost, huge fan of the author! His "Apocalypse gates" series is one of my favorite LitRPG books ever! Rough, brutal world with a a psychopath hero, that doesn't give a damn and earns the name "Badass", while also not being whiny at all or unbelievably overpowered. I was also once a fan of his other works with Alpha World books as well. Yet it drifted from an MC who was quite awesome, to him being quite whiny, emotional, and overall, pathetic. Why do i bring all this up? Well, as much as i love this book, i can see the trend the author has presented for the MC here, Sean, to head down the exact same path. I can see the next few books have less and less action, story, and character development and instead focus on the MC internal torment of having basically a "Harem". This all due to the fact that, "My father didn't raise me that way". All fine and dandy, BUT I SINCERELY HOPE HE DOES NOT DO THIS. This is what destroyed his previous Alpha World books for me personally.Hope it does not go that way, as the setting, character, world building and abilities seem pretty fantastic.
A bit short, but the cost is also low. At least the "higher beings" that are this book's focus are centered on the UK and Ireland, and have legitimate contention. What seems to be a building harem motif is probably unnecessary, but may add some spice. This could be a relatively long series - the MC has a long way to go before he's in the same power range as his end game opponents.Borderline GameLit - the MC does have a character sheet of sorts, but that's about it.So, we have death by thunder god, an interim layover where the MC chooses between 4 contenders for his soul, and transport (with new body) to a planet where Fae rule. Objectives if he chooses the path include removing the Fae rulers.Beyond the obvious, the MC must be special - why else would he have options from 4 contenders?Hopefully the beginning of an interesting series...
This book started and ended well, in typical Schinhofen fashion. The hero is a good guy who made a tough choice and paid for it. Now he is in a situation that put him at risk from gods and Faes. I really liked the philosophy and the worlbuilding in this new series! Bidding words, promises hold a contractual value in this new world, but you know that people are people and take shamelessly advantage of it. The hero is still not on track to change things like the Goddess who gifted him his new life hope to, but I can feel it coming.I just hope it's not a case of Book 1 being good and the rest of the sequels end up being akin to Japanese lightnovels (really bad) like a certain Alpha Company book... Daniel don't fail me!
The story is fairly typical for the genre. Man from modern Earth dies, gets a new body and is sent to a world to hopefully help the mortal locals. He quickly learns the world is quiet different from Earth and he has to get used to a new society and a new body without drawing the ire of the locals. Of course he finds new friends and enemies. The story is entertaining. I especially like the world, but I have a soft spot for fey and love to (ab)use the power of deals in my own RPGs. I like the characters even though the protagonist biggest flaw is a temper which can be easily overdone for me.There are two things though that raise some questions for me. I am not a big fan of the beginning. It just feels a bit weird, four deities fighting over a soul and even though I am not religious, the way the archangel and Lucifer were portrayed irritated me. Hopefully we get some answers in the future. The second point is the treatment of the bonded by society. It feels too harsh to me, especially in regards to those with a lifebond. I admit though that the few examples in the book involve situations where either the owner is a bastard or the bonded considered bad due to bloodlines so I might misunderstood things If a lifebond is truly an unbreakable bond of the soul which always results in love, the bonded is an extention of the master. Treating the bonded badly would be as treating the master badly. I would certaily expect the most powerful agents of nobles, let alone the queens, to be bound.Anyway, I liked the book well enough to eagerly wait for the next part.
I swear when I first heard that Daniel Schinhofen was taking time in his writing schedule to add a third series before he finished with the Alpha World storyline which he had already at that point stated would only run 2-5 more books (really he said more like 3 but I added the 5 as a fan's hopes) I was frankly just a touch (read as "VERY") annoyed at the extra delays being added between installments of Alpha World and Apocalypse Gates. Now however after reading book one of Binding Words darn it all to the abyss and back if he hasn't just gone and started a new series that I can VERY easily see being one of my absolute favorites! I swear if this man could get books released every 6 weeks as Michael-Scott Earle has tended towards historically then I feel quite confident that he would be giving MSE a serious run for his money in regards to just how many people buy every book possible and how adamantly we all are constantly chomping at the bit for every shred of new content released!
