I bought this for my neighbor. We both feed and enjoy watching birds in our yards. I've had "bird books" which have taught me a lot through the years. My neighbor is more of a novice and would often call me and try to describe a bird she'd seen, for me to tell her what it was. She LOVES this book. She happily told me all about the junco she had seen, and relayed when they arrive and how long they remain in our area. The color plates and easy system to find a bird based on color and size make this a perfect beginners bird book.

We love this book!! Ever since moving to an area with more nature, we've been so intrigued by all of the species of birds we see at our feeders. Thanks to this book, we've easily identified over ten different species (both sexes too), in the couple weeks of having this book. The book is a handy size that easily fits in yours hands and is great to have lying around near the window for easy reference. The book is organized by the color of the birds so when you see one you can usually identify it right away. The book also goes into small detail about the birds' habits and native areas. I highly recommend checking out this book if you're looking for your first basic bird reference book.

Happier than expected with this book.I bought this book for a small child but really it would be great for anyone who is wanting to learn more about birds. I like that the birds are grouped by color in this book. It makes it much easier to find a particular bird. The pictures are nice as well.

This is my favorite bird guide for common backyard birds. Very easy to use with just enough information on the species. The guide is used by looking up the main colors of the bird you see, then you flip through that section looking at the clear photos until you spot the one you are looking for. The benefit of this style is that the same species of birds may appear in more than one location in the book according to their seasonal coloring ( winter color vs spring/ summer color). Perfect for those of us who don't always know!I tracked this book down to replace my original when it got water damage. It was worth the hunt as newer books don't feel as used friendly to me!

This book fits in a purse and does not take a lot of space. This is important because you can take it with you and if you see a bird you like, you just have to whip this out and bam! Name the bird and find out facts about it, like how to attract it and stuff. My 3 yr. old twins are into birds and so I got into birds too, we have been identifying birds left and right. They know I get the information from the book and now whenever we go outside we take our little book with us. Mind you, we live in NYC! But we have seen: America Robins, Indigo Bunting, Purple Finch, European Starling...etc. among other birds like ducks and pigeons. It's so nice to identify these birds. We love it.

On a whim I installed a bird feeder and within minutes of filling it with food the birds arrived. It was great, it was wonderful, but I quickly realized that I couldn't identify half of the birds that came to visit!I rushed out and bought a few bird identification books, and the Stokes Beginner's Guide to Birds has become my favorite. It is my favorite because:1. The photos are crisp and clear, and the colors are amazingly vibrant.2. The photos of the birds are large, probably taking up 2/3 of each page.3. Because the photos are so large there is not a lot of room for text, but the text that is there is direct and to the point. For each bird there is information on 5 topics: Identification, Voice, Habitat, Nesting, and Attracting. Because of the limited page space, only a few sentences (2-3) are used to explain each topic. This book is a great guide for beginners. It is short, sweet and to the point. But possibly a little too short? Shortness would be my only criticism of this book. Not enough species are listed. There are a few birds that visit my feeder that couldn't be identify using this book alone. So this is a great book for the beginner or casual backyard birdwatcher, but you will need something more comprehensive if you want to identify every bird that lands in your backyard.

I bought this guide as my 2yr old is obsessive with bird species! This has not only been great for her to memorize even more birds, but has actually been really useful when trying to identify birds coming to our new feeders. Having it organized by color was genius! This is by far the best bird species book we have in terms of being a practical look up to identify species. The only negative is that the map doesn't seem accurate, or perhaps is just outdated? We definitely have both house and purple finches at our house and at my mother's house and the map does not show them being in Minnesota! Every other guide I look up shows them being very common here.

Is a good starter book. It uses an easy to identify color coding system to identify the birds; the book groups birds by their colors. It is easy to see which 'brown' bird you are looking at and then you can compare to the other similar 'brown' birds for a more exact identification. This is the book in a nutshell.Good pictures, well organized and a great way to start seeing the differences between similar birds. It is not all inclusive of all possible birds in the area, but hits the most likely to see and is a great place to start bird watching.
