About the Author
Elizabeth D. Samet received her BA from Harvard and her PhD in English literature from Yale. She is the author of No Man's Land: Preparing for War and Peace in Post-9/11 America (Macmillan); and Soldier's Heart: Reading Literature Through Peace and War at West Point (FSG & Picador), which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Current Interest and was named one of The New York Time's 100 Notable Books of 2007; and Willing Obedience: Citizens, Soldiers, and the Progress of Consent in America, 1776–1898 (Stanford UP). Her essays and reviews have been published in various venues, including The New York Times Magazine, The New York Times Book Review, and The New Republic. Samet is a professor of English at West Point. She speaks often to both civilian and military audiences on the role of literature in shaping future military officers, and she was a member of the Army Chief of Staff's 2011–2012 Task Force on Leader Development. She has appeared on the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, NPR, and the BBC World Service.

The purpose of this review is to alert potential buyers to issues with the footnoting. I’ve read Grant’s Memoirs before, but bought this volume to reread it because of the nature of the footnotes. They are not dry, scholarly footnotes, but nice juicy footnotes which head off in unexpected directions. However, on both my Kindle Oasis 1 and my iPad mini, reading the footnotes presents problems that should not exist. So that’s why I give a single star to what otherwise is a five star book.Kindle app for iPad: The problem here is that when I tap the footnote number, I get an amputated version of the footnote. Basically, I get the first paragraph of the footnote, with an invitation to “Go To Footnotes†to read the rest. The footnote occupies the bottom of the page one you tap the number, leaving the upper part of the page still onscreen. This might actually be a feature for anyone who wants to take a quick look at the first paragraph of the footnote, then decide it’s not interesting & return to the page with a tap on the page. I am not one of those people. I want to go to the entire footnote immediately.Kindle Oasis 1: There’s a more serious problem here, which might impact any of the Kindle ebook readers. As with the iPad Kindle app, I tap the footnote number and get the first paragraph of the footnote, with an option to “Go To Footnotes†to continue reading the footnote. Unlike the iPad app, the ebook version puts you on a new page when this happens, so you have to tap an X in the upper right of the page to return to where you were in the book. No big deal. But the real problem is that the footnote font is dimmed out. In good light you can make it out, but if you are relying on the backlighting to read, it’s very difficult to see the footnote text. Bolding doesn’t help. And the problem persists if you then Go To Footnote.In short, on a Kindle e-ink reader, the main purpose of buying this version of the book is defeated by the dimmed out footnote font.I’ve never encountered this sort of thing before, and have no idea how to fix it. I strongly suspect that the issue lies with the ebook file itself, not with my Kindle. Oddly, this problem does not show up in the Kindle sample for the book, so you can’t test it out for yourself before buying.UPDATE: Someone over at Mobilread suggested that the problem might lie with the color of the footnotes. Sure enough, on my ipad the footnotes show up as being blue rather than black like the primary text. So unless there’s a way to change that color on my Kindle, which I don’t see, this is a defect that the publisher should correct.
I read Grants memoirs years ago and loved it. But now, reading with the copious annotations, I realize how much went right by me. For example, why is he going into great detail about certain actions he and another union general made during a certain battle. Now it is explained -- that other general made accusations of incompetence against Grant for those actions well after the was was over. Speaking of which it was interesting to note the the biggest arguments after the war were not between union officers and rebel officers but rather between union and union. Grant's memoirs are a great document of American literature and history and these annotations make reading them even more fascinating.
As editor, Elizabeth Samet has opened the world and words of Grant to us all. If you’ve read Grant’s Memoirs before, you’ll quickly realize how much Samet’s work adds to your understanding—through letters, photographs, and related historical notes. You’ll understand the historical figure of Grant in a richer and deeper way.
Excellent additions to this volume by the editor.
I have read the Grant Bio more than once because it really is a starting point to understanding the Civil War as it was fought. The editors notes to this edition make the Grant work also an introduction to the reality of the second half of the 1800's and relate his world to classical and to modern life and times.
