Very very nice book!

This is a beautiful book. From what I have read so far, it is very clearly written (undoubtedly the product of years of rewritings and revisions), connecting topics that are very connected but normally never included in one book on Lie groups (including symmetric functions, tableaux and many other topics from algebraic combinatorics). I plan to write a more detailed review once I have finished reading it, but at 600 pages (of densely packed but very well organized information) and less than US$50.00, it is very highly recommended as a textbook and as a reference.PS If this book were published by Kluwer, they would probably be charging US$500.00

Don't get me wrong, this book is good to read and I will be buying more of David Baldacci's books, but this one was a bit strange. There is a sub plot involving Michelle that has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the story. I kept waiting for both stories to come together, but it never did. It was distracting from the main storyline, in fact, the sub plot could have had it's own book. Both stories are good, with surprises aplenty but it still didn't make sense to me. Overall, First Family is a good book with the main story line being strong and the book flows along nicely. Would I recommend this book to anyone else? Absolutely!

The First Lady Jane Cox knew Sean King many years ago when he was still in the Secret Service. Now, she needs his help and his partner’s Michelle Maxwell to find her niece who apparently has been kidnapped from her home. But just how much help does she really want? Are there compromising skeletons that could be uncovered in their digging?Little do they know that Jane and her husband, the president, immensely angered someone years ago. They have to use all of their wits to avoid being collateral damage in the agenda of a very determined individual, especially because they are getting very little help from Jane. One thing is for sure, the status quo before the abduction gets turned upside down. And there is the call out of the blue that Michelle’s mother has died, possibly murdered, on top of their case. Michelle finally has to confront her past.

King and Maxwell are such a good team. Of the 3 - 4 books I've read involving this team, I like this book the best. It was so interesting and I liked much of the dialogue between Sean and Michelle. They're so comfortable with each other. Their banter is fun to hear and occasionally they ribbed one another - particularly in this book. We also sometimes know their inner thoughts - including dread or fear at times. Very near the beginning, King and Maxwell come across Tyler - a teenager - who was thinking about running away from home. Initially, almost against their better judgement, they take to him and become involved in helping him with what turns out to be huge; at the same time, they know he can't really pay them. As they they become more involved, and some threats were made against them, Sean quipped to Michelle: "In for a dime, in for a dollar." Michelle replied dryly, "I'm just wondering when we're going to run out of change." Eventually their sheltering Tyler and their wanting to understand more about some mysterious events unfolding led them them in several different directions. The plot kept going and going: in the first third of the book it seemed as if nothing was really going to happen. Plus at times too much explanation was given about what they were doing. Then it suddenly picked up. I'm so glad I continued the book. Of course some bad guys were involved; we're kept in the dark for quite awhile about how exactly are the "bad guys".

A lively sometimes believable story of sex and violence. Politicians think they are above the law and usually are. Sam Quarry with a work ethic that made America what it is levels the playing field because his daughter was damaged with disregard. King and Maxwell save the day but later make sure documents of politician malfeasance reaches appropriate hands. Though Sam Quarry is killed it is during the effort to save the youngsters. Ever the teacher, he instructs the children to avoid hatred because revenge is wrong.

Baldacci is one of my favorite authors. Anything he writes, I am eager to read and always enjoy particularly the political plots. This one was intriguing in that he did NOT try to paint the President and the First Lady as perfectly innocent and untouchable but instead as real people with real faults and problems. The picture of the First Lady as responsible for her husband is one that too many women understand too well. King and Maxwell are, as usual, bigger than life in some ways, but that is what we like about them. Their dedication to one another is particularly attractive. King's trip to Maxwell's home town is particularly touching and their dedication to that mystery in the middle of the Presidential kidnapping was a glimpse into their real character. The exposure to the little place in Alabama was a character sketch in itself. My heart understood the Quarry family as well as Ruth Ann and Gabriel and their devotion. In short, the plot within a plot is pure Baldacci at his best and the end is absolutely AMAZING! When I finished the book, I put it down absolutely exhausted but totally pleased with another finely tuned mystery that teased my brain and taught m a lesson. I highly recommend it to readers who love to be challenged and want to feel the energy.

For an author that apparently researches his books, I had a difficult time with the kidnapper. The author makes it a point to tell us several times that the man had no education and then mentions several times that he was a F-4 pilot in Viet Nam. As an Air Force veteran I can tell you that a college education and officer training are a requirement to be a military pilot. These type of gaffes make it hard to stay focused on a book that already wanders around too much. Where were the editors?

I bought this set for my daughter who just turned 7 years old. She absolutely loves reading and I knew it would be something she would enjoy reading. Every night we read several chapters together and I am so proud of her, these books are great!! They really keep her entertained and wanting to actually keep reading. I knew that it could be a challenge, because some vocabulary was way past her level, but it’s been great because she has learned many new words! All in all, absolutely love this set!Oh and my son(3 years old) loves hearing in on us reading!

I HAD to purchase this set for a few of the girls in my 5th grade class. They have devoured this series. These books are great for upper elementary students.

Mermaids are all the rage right now. Anything that will get kid's attention and get them reading is great. Purchased for an 11 year old, but could probably span ages 8 thru 13.

My 7 year old daughter (will be 8 in a couple weeks) LOVED the first book but was a bit scared by the second so we are going to hold off until she's a bit older.

We bought these to read to our 5 year old daughter. She really enjoys the story. The story is more complex then other chapter books we have read to her (Junie B. Jones and Magic Tree House), so there were times where she seemed a bit bored. Our 11 year old asked to borrow them from her sister and she enjoyed them.

My 8 year old daughter loves these books!!! Such good stories and we love the 6 pack so she already has the next one in line every time she’s done with a book!!

My 8 yr old daughter is LOVING this series! She loved the Nevergirls too, but this one is her favorite. Definitely recommend if you have a daughter who loves mermaids.

The best series my 7 year old daughter and I have read together ever and we read a lot. The story is equally interesting for parents and kids. We both get so excited about reading each night because we can’t wait to see what happens! Highly recommend!

Mike Barrett has been helping people do better on standardized tests since he was in high school. This book was absolutely worth it. Barrett changed my whole perspective on the test and really helped me understand what I needed to do in order to get a high score. He clearly explains how the SAT is made and why understanding this is so crucial to doing well on it. I used this book all summer to study for my SAT and got a 1550 on my first try!!

I read this book so carefully and took so many notes that I can say I literally spent at least three entire days with it. And it payed out! Went from 1220 to 1460.

This book is hands down the most useful book you could use to raise your score for the New SAT.I’m a rising junior scheduled to take the SAT this October, and so far my family’s spent hundreds of dollars on outside tutors and tuition programs to teach me the “hidden secrets” of the SAT and understand the ins and outs of this standardized test. This book will cover nearly all the strategies taught by outside, private tutors AND teach you how to truly understand the test, why the College Board designed it the way it is, and how to exploit its weaknesses to your advantage.Not only that, but you get detailed answer explanations for every question of every section of four real College Board SAT tests, covering why every wrong answer is wrong and why every right answer is objectively right.This book has been my holy grail in self-preparation for the New SAT, and I highly recommend you buy it if you are serious about raising your score by at least a couple hundred points.If you are still unsure about this book, just let its five-star reviews speak for themselves…Enjoy!

Amazing test prep. A weekish before the SAT I realized I should probably study, so off I went to Amazon to find a book - there was no class, tutor, or online video that I felt could really help me in the amount of time I had left. I saw the Black Book at the top of the page, but after hearing it had 600 pages immediately looked for another option. I read online about the best books to use and eventually came back to this behemoth. Okay, 600 pages or not, I guess this was the book. I got the book that week before my first SAT, and, while trying to read 600 pages seemed impossible, actually reading the book wasn't as hard as it initially seemed because the way they write is easy to understand and engaging. Plus, probably over half of the pages were walkthroughs of the first four practice tests so there wasn't actually 600 pages you have to read every line of. The walkthroughs, though, were invaluable as they helped me understand how to work through all of the problems multiple different ways (you can see how others might answer that you never thought of, and that might actually be better). If you don't have a lot of time before the test, or you don't want to read all 600 pages, you can just do one or two of the walkthroughs and that will reduce a lot of pages. For me, each night I read one test section's material/tips, did the first practice test on that section (I printed the practice tests out myself-they aren't in the book), and then scored it and evaluated how I could improve using his walkthroughs. This meant that after four days I had read about the reading, math, writing, and essay (the book is structured in that order) and had finished the first practice test. After that, I did one whole practice test and reviewed it using his walkthroughs for the next two nights. At this point, my score hadn't improved a lot since the first practice test, but each time I had encountered new problems that I wasn't sure about and after looking at the walkthroughs felt confident in being able to do next time. On the day of the test, I felt much better about my timing, skills, and the test's structure overall because of Mike and Patrick's book. One of the questions I had gotten wrong and reviewed in a walkthrough the night before actually appeared on the test! Not yet sure of the score, but I can say it didn't seem as hard as I thought it would be solely due to their solid advice and practice walkthroughs. 10/10 recommend to anyone, whether you have a lot of time to study or not!Update: The first SAT I took (June 2018), the one I wrote this review about originally, I got a 1500. I wanted to take it one more time, but I then procrastinated studying again and with one week left reviewed the book and took the remaining practice test that the book covers. I also looked back over the printed practice tests I did the first time, finding where I commonly made mistakes. For the August 2018 SAT I got a 1530. This book was amazing not only for how to think about the test, but also just to review concepts for both math and grammar.

Spent the night reading the first 70 pages. This book just made me realize I can have better marks than what I was hoping for. I was skeptical about getting even a 700 on reading and writing section. After the first 70 pages and using the methods written, I answered a couple of questions without even reading the passage. I was completely blown away by it. Best 29 bucks ever spent. With this knowledge I am looking forward to get around 780. This book completely stated the exact mistakes I was making reading a passage, and how it prevented me from getting answers right. I still have yet to read the writing and math section, but I am optimistic that the book will help me in those sections as well.To be honest this is my first review, and Mike Barrett, I would like to thank you for helping me out here. Your book helped me understand the test better and reduce my stress and anxiety.I would definitely recommend people to buy it. If you are expecting practice questions and other stuff like you find in Kaplan, barron's and Princeton review, you wont find them in the book. But whats inside will completely amaze you. So simple yet never thought about.

Only Sam Spiegel, the producer at Columbia Pictures could have gotten this movie done. You will learn how the part was first offered to Leslie Howard, Lawrence Olivier, and then Albert Finney, until settling on newcomer Peter O'Toole.In conclusion, if you love history and the grand expanse of extraordinary people doing extraordinary things then you are going to love this book. This a very well writen and interesting book about a facinating man who lived and was a major player during a critical period in our history.However, there are 1-3 typos on almost every page of the book I have read so far and I'm on chapter 4. Almost all of the typos involve one, two or sometimes three words bunched together to form word-abominations such as:"himhave" "timewas" "anadventure" "discribinghis" etc.I guess these errors were introduced when the book was digitized. I also guess that the book was not proof-read after this procedure.These errors are begining to distract from my reading pleasure. A corrected version would be appreciated.

One of the best stories I've read about man's extraordinary will to live, and how this helped bring about rescue during escape as a POW. In the same league as "Into the Mouth of the Cat," (the story of, Vietnam, POW Lance Sijon and his refusal to submit to his captors demands while being held prisoner in North Vietnam's, ill-famed, Hoa Lo Prison and his subsequent heroics leading to his being awarded, posthumously, the Medal of Honor), and "Code of Honor" (Col. John Dramesi's story of his time held as a, Vietnam, POW, and of his strict adherence to the 'Code of Conduct' , and at what costs he did this). A must-read (this, and the other two books that I mentioned) for anyone who wants to know what a true hero is made of.

This book is not only a very well researched and written story of Dieter Dengler's life that covered his childhood in wartime and postwar Germany, through his early learning how to survive, on to his interesting quest to come to the USA and become a pilot, through his early disappointments in the Air Force, on the college to get an AA, and then on to acceptance and training to become a naval aviator, and his service during the Vietnam War, capture in Laos, treatment and daring escape and rescue. This book is not only brilliantly written but in great depth covers the dangers, skills, successes and sometime failure of the brave men and women who succeed in become a Naval Aviator, a skill more demanding than perhaps any other form of piloting an aircraft due to the demanding and unforgiving requirements of taking off and landing plane on an aircraft carrier in all types of weather day and night.The book very well covers the Spad pilots of the USS Ranger, the carrier LtJG Dengler flew off of and served on during his tour off Vietnam. As a retired Marine Corps officer I understand and appreciate the varying degrees of leadership and skills a military officer must serve with and under. The book shows that while there are mostly qualified and successful officers/pilots there are also some who are not that good at leading and sometimes lack in both skills and personality (I personally witnessed that a few times during my 25 years active service) and am thankfully they are few in number compared to the many selfless and dedicated officers who serve our country (same could be said about the enlisted ranks which I also had the privilege to serve among.)The book very well covers the loss of Dengler's A-1E Skyraider (Spad), his attempted evasion, capture, escape and recapture, his terrible treatment and his personal skills and determination which allowed him an opportunity to escape and evade again, until rescued by the grace of God and dedicated rescue service provided when possible.The book then covers Dengler's return to civilian life briefly and his love, loss and sad ending. It showed Dengler lived life to the fullest and bravely chose when to end it. This book is an amazing story and excellently portrays the life of a brave American. The author did a tremendous job in writing the book. There was no part in my mind that was not interesting. Also, I see where someone gave this book a one star rating because he had a paper book written in 1979 and didn't think this book could add anything. I disagree. First this book is offered electronically on Kindle which in itself is a benefit for those of us who enjoy reading off a Kindle and it is cheaper to purchase than a paperback. Secondly, this book may just offer a better written story and one more informational than the Escape from Laos book authored by Dengler. Just a thought. Whatever, I see no reason to downrate a book just because you have another book covering the story and most especially if you haven't even purchased this one.

Seabury Quinn was a pulp magazine author, whose popular stories of the occult detective Jules de Grandin were published in Weird Tales between 1925 and 1951. Quinn penned ninety-two short stories and one full-length novel featuring “the occult Hercule Poirot,” which were enormously popular with readers. Quinn died in 1969.

Previously only available in an expensive deluxe three volume set (and an incomplete paperback series), the Jules de Grandin series will be in five volumes from Night Shade Books. This volume reprints all the stories that were in Weird Tales from 1926 to 1928, starting with the first story, "The Horror on the Links."This is a handsome volume, well done. The tales of the supernatural Sherlock Holmes, as he was called, are pretty good, and ran right up until almost the end of the magazine, in the early 1950s. De Grandin fought everything from vampires, ghosts and demons to mummies and killer cults.One odd credit on the copyright page is the claim that stories are by permission of “Weird Tales Limited,” but they are in fact public domain. The copyright was never renewed on most issues of Weird Tales, which folded in 1954. It also says “The Horror on the Links” is copyright Quinn’s estate. That may mean it’s the revised version from "The Phantom Fighter" collection of 1966, in which Quinn modernized the stories collected. Quinn died in 1969.A worth addition to any library of pulp fiction.

Seabury Quinn was a mortician who wrote in his spare time. As it happened, he was the most popular writer in the annals of "Weird Tales" His name on the cover could boost sales tremendously. His Mist popular creation were doctors turned detectives Towbridge and Jules de Grandin. Overwritten but entertaining, these stories were the "X-Files" of their day. Were-gorillas, disembodied spirits, exotic life forms, ancient curses, all these and more were fodder for Quinn whose writing abilities never quite matched his imagination. I took off a star because Quinn's wooden style has not aged well. There is a reason why he faded into obscurity while Robert E Howard, August Derlieth, and H. P. Lovecraft became MORE famous as time progressed. Once you learn the ins and outs of Quinn's quite idiosyncratic style, he becomes much more fun to read. Your milage may vary.

It is volume one in a series that promises to reprint all of the tales Seabury Quinn wrote featuring the little blonde Frenchman with his vast knowledge and experience with the unknown.Jules de Grandin resides for the most part with his friend and biographer Dr. Samuel Trowbridge in Harrisonville, New Jersey. Dr. Trowbridge and Grandin travel widely, and some of their adventures occur in other countries.Across these 22 stories our heroic duo battles demons, ghosts, vampires, and such creatures. There is almost always a lovely woman who is in danger of losing both body and soul.Jules de Grandin, much like Sherlock Holmes has supreme faith in his own abilities and knowledge. He comes across as pompous and self-promoting. He has little use for those who cannot see what he sees. He is often short with Dr. Trowbridge to the point of insult, as Holmes was with Dr. Watson. In the end, he will always return to his friendship with Trowbridge and give an explanation of his thought process and how he succeeded in saving the day.In these first 22 stories, I give Best in Book to “The Gods of East and West.” The story I liked the least was “The Dead Hand.”Fans of Holmes, Carnacki the Ghost Finder, John the Balladeer, John Thunstone, etc should be able to enjoy these tales with much delight! If you've read typical letters from H. P. Lovecraft discussing the contents of the latest issues of WEIRD TALES, you know his mentions of the short stories of Seabury Quinn are generally accompanied by deep groans. Quinn typically placed around 6 stories per year in the monthly WEIRD. The stories feature the adventures of a Hercule Poirot clone, Jules de Grandin, as related by a dimwitted physician sidekick. The introduction to the first volume of the projected 5-volume collection of these tales gives some good advice... let several weeks go by between stories. [My recommendation is to read another, unrelated book between stories.]De Grandin specializes in the occult, the weird, the supernatural and the fantastic. Coming up with a new supernatural menace roughly every two months for 25 years and over 90 stories meant, of course, a good deal of repeated plowing of the same furrows. Sometimes Quinn finds a nice twist, as in the very first published story, where the reader will assume from the beginning that a mad doctor has invented a serum that transforms a nice young man into a murderous gorilla whenever the moon is full. Wrong!If you want to get the full benefit of these attractively printed and bound volumes, you will need some patience and some tolerance, because we are definitely skirting the boundaries of the kingdom of Hack. And more than sometimes, crossing that border.

This book is a good introduction to Dr Jules Di Grandin, the occult detective created by Seabury Quinn in Weird Tales magazine in the 1920's. Quinn was a great author who knew how to tell a story and he was prolific as well turning out a lot of material for a long time. You will notice that there are similarities between Di Grandin and his chronicler, Dr Trowbridge, and Sherlock Holmes &Dr Watson. Don't let that put you off because the differences between them are just as many. The emphasis is on the supernatural and the dark arts and demons of the occult and Di Grandin's ability and knowledge to combat the menace. These are entertaining pulp stories that are written well above some of the dreck that filled pulps during the heyday of the 1930's and '40s.
